The Forrester Wave : Data Leak Prevention, Q2, 2008

Forrester evaluated all leading Data Leak Prevention (DLP) vendors ( Code Green Networks, InfoWatch, McAfee, Orchestria, Reconnex, RSA Security, TrendMicro,Verdasys, Websense and Workshare) across approximately 74 criteria based on analysis, breadth of data domains and product vision and found that Websense and Reconnex came out on top because of their strong go-to-market strategy and automated learning capabilities, respectively.

Content security frontrunner, Websense, sits atop the DLP market thanks to its balance of first-class product capabilities and solid strategy. The company leverages its partnership with Safend to offer a DLP product consisting of both a network appliance and endpoint software. Most of Websense’s customers have implemented its original offering: appliance-based network DLP that safeguards DIM. But the Websense Data Security Suite now protects across DAR, DIM, and DIU. The product’s analysis engine is language-agnostic and includes templates applicable to many regions. Websense uses PreciseID fingerprinting technology to identify both structured and unstructured data for more than 375 file formats, and it can correlate multiple data fields from a single record to define the exact data to protect (e.g., name and social security number).

The Forrester Wave : Web Filtering, Q2, 2009

Forrester evaluated leading Web filtering technology vendors (Cisco Systems/IronPort, Google, Marshal, McAfee, MessageLabs, Microsoft, Secure Computing, Symantec, Trend Micro and Websense) across 53 criteria based on product strength, vendor’s strategy and vendor’s market presence. Websense leadership comes from having the broadest solution on the market today, encompassing URL filtering, antimalware, DLP, and mobile filtering. Websense also owns many best-of-breed technologies, including its URL list and DLP technologies.

Websense. The largest market share holder in the Web filtering market, Websense also has the most mature technology. Websense is the top-ranked vendor in this evaluation because of its broad functionality and innovative strategy. Websense now sells an appliance version of its offering in addition to its original software. Of all the vendors we evaluated, Websense has the best business accessibility in that it offers granular reporting and easy access to business analytics. The product also comes with excellent support for enterprise management, such as directory integration, multi-level reporting, and expressive policies. Websense offers good functionality for off-network Web filtering, a feature that many vendors currently lack. On the threat analysis side, Websense’s ThreatSeeker lab is one of the best in analyzing Web threats. Websense’s strategy includes investing heavily in Web 2.0 application processing technologies. Its recent acquisition of Defensio gives it a new cloud-based capability to process outbound blog content. We expect that this cloud infrastructure will no doubt take on more content filtering capabilities going forward.

The Forrester Wave: E-mail Filtering, Q2 2009

In late 2008, Forrester conducted an in-depth evaluation of email security filtering, based on 57 criteria which focus on e-mail filtering offerings, vendor’s strategy and each vendor’s customer install base and revenue growth. Despite the flurry of recent market acquisitions, we found that this market is still characterized by strong appliance vendors with upstart cloud providers poised to win market shares in the long run. More specifically, we found that Symantec, Cisco Systems, and Secure Computing lead the field because of their strong functionality and focused strategy. Google, MessageLabs, Microsoft, and Websense are close behind with innovative cloud-based offerings. Websense products provide strong support for outbound content filtering and have outstanding threat analysis.

Websense. Websense Email Security (WES) and Websense Hosted Email Security (HES) both came from Websense’s acquisition of SurfControl. Websense also acquired a leading DLP vendor, PortAuthority, in 2007. As a result, Websense’s email products have solid built-in support for outbound DLP, including extensive compliance dictionaries, lexicons, and regular expressions. For the on-premise WES, it also offers a separate add-on DLP module for more sophisticated DLP analysis, also built on PortAuthority’s technology. Websense uses a link service that offers tight integration of content filtering and DLP.7 Today, the HES and WES come with disparate administrative interfaces and policy templates. Websense’s strategy includes a big push for its service offering, but to compete with more well-known service vendors it needs to provide stronger policy management and play to its strength of being an on-premise software vendor with more flexible deployment options.
